MSMEs are the backbone of Indonesia’s economy, with millions of businesses that employ a large workforce. However, many MSME owners still face various challenges. This is where MSME mentoring plays an important role.
Mentoring is not just a one-time training session. It is an ongoing process that helps business owners improve their capacity, expand their networks, and compete in broader markets.
Through targeted MSME mentoring, entrepreneurs can gain knowledge, experience, and access to opportunities that were previously difficult to reach. Many mentoring programs have even helped micro businesses grow into companies capable of entering national and international markets.

MSME mentoring is an ongoing coaching process designed to help business owners build capacity, strengthen governance, enhance product competitiveness, and achieve sustainable growth.
Mentoring may include:
Unlike seminars or one-way training sessions, mentoring is more personal. Mentors help business owners find solutions based on their specific business conditions.
Some key benefits of MSME mentoring include:
Effective MSME mentoring includes several complementary forms of support.
Business and financial management training is the foundation of MSME mentoring. Entrepreneurs learn simple bookkeeping, cash flow management, profitable pricing, and short- and long-term business planning.
Strong financial literacy can open access to formal financing from banks or other financial institutions.
MSMEs that want to scale up must meet certain quality standards for both domestic and export markets. Mentors help entrepreneurs improve production processes, meet hygiene and product safety standards, and obtain certifications such as PIRT, halal, or SNI.
Distribution is one of the biggest barriers for MSMEs. This type of mentoring may include building stronger branding and packaging, connecting MSMEs with e-commerce platforms, listing products on modern marketplaces, and supporting participation in exhibitions and international expos.
In today’s digital era, digital marketing is no longer optional. Strong MSME mentoring teaches business owners how to use social media, create effective promotional content, manage online stores, and leverage data for decision-making.
Many MSMEs still operate without complete legal documents, such as a Business Identification Number (NIB), business taxpayer number, or relevant permits. Mentors assist MSMEs with this legalization process, so they can access government programs, participate in tenders, or become corporate partners.
A frequently overlooked part of MSME mentoring is the personal and psychological aspect. Experienced mentors can help entrepreneurs think more strategically, build confidence, and overcome mental barriers.
This kind of support can create a deeper impact than technical training alone.

It is implemented through three main stages: basic training, technical workshops, and marketing facilitation, involving 168 MSMEs from 16 companies under PT Astra International Tbk Group.
Yayasan Dharma Bhakti Astra (YDBA) is one of PT Astra International Tbk’s key institutions for MSME mentoring.
In 2025, YDBA’s achievements included:
Through collaboration with United Tractors Pandu Engineering (UTPE), Astra Foundation mentored 24 small and medium industrial players in Central Java on Quality, Cost, and Delivery (QCD).
The program went beyond training by integrating mentored businesses into PT Astra International Tbk’s global supply chain through 36 MoUs between 24 Tier-1 companies and 33 small and medium industrial enterprises.
As a result, local suppliers have become part of an international-scale automotive industry ecosystem.
Astra’s MSME mentoring does not only target urban entrepreneurs. Through the Desa Sejahtera Astra (DSA) program, PT Astra International Tbk supports village-based MSMEs across 1,533 villages in 35 Indonesian provinces.
One notable initiative was facilitating mentored MSMEs' participation in Trade Expo Indonesia (TEI) 2025, one of Indonesia’s largest export exhibitions. During the event, 23 MSMEs mentored by PT Astra International Tbk participated, recording total transactions of IDR 70.79 billion.
Participants also received export training and business matching sessions with international buyers. Products showcased included processed foods, agricultural commodities, and handicrafts from various regions. This shows how long-term mentoring can help MSMEs move from local markets to competitive export opportunities.
