The Goals and Benefits of an Entrepreneurship Program

An entrepreneurship program is a structured initiative designed to help individuals or groups start, develop, or scale their businesses through training, access to capital, mentoring, and marketing opportunities. These programs do more than support entrepreneurs at the early stages. They also stimulate regional economic growth.

The key benefits of such programs include the following.

1. For Individuals and MSMEs

  • Developing business and management skills
  • Gaining hands-on experience in running a business
  • Expanding business connections and professional networks

2. For the Economy and Society

  • Creating new job opportunities
  • Supporting more equitable regional economic growth
  • Driving innovation and strengthening the competitiveness of MSMEs
  • Building community-based economies

In other words, these programs contribute to the broader well-being of entire communities, not just individual business owners.

Common Examples of Entrepreneurship Programs

Here are some of the most widely implemented types of entrepreneurship programs:

1. Business Competency Training: Workshops covering business management, branding, and pricing strategies.

2. Business Coaching and Mentoring: Participants receive guidance from experienced mentors to avoid common business pitfalls.

3. Business Incubators: Typically include mentoring, seed funding, and market testing support.

4. Capital Access or Microfinancing Programs: Provide soft loans or entry points into financing ecosystems.

5. Digital Transformation Programs: Train MSMEs in digital marketing, e-commerce, and building a stronger online presence.

6. Business Partnership Schemes: Facilitate MSMEs in becoming part of larger industrial supply chains.

Entrepreneurship Programs Initiated by Astra

Through its sustainability approach, Astra focuses not only on the environment but also on the economic empowerment of communities. Supporting entrepreneurship is one of its key priorities. Here are some of the entrepreneurship initiatives Astra has launched.

1. SATU Indonesia Awards

Semangat Astra Terpadu Untuk (SATU) Indonesia Awards is an annual award presented by Astra to recognize the outstanding contributions of individuals, communities, and partners who have actively driven progress across Indonesia. The award spans several categories, which are Health, Education, Environment, Entrepreneurship, and Technology, along with one group category representing all five fields.

In 2024, the Entrepreneurship category was won by Yuyun Ahdiyanti through her initiative, Srikandi Penenun Asa Kampung Ntobo from Bima, West Nusa Tenggara. Under this initiative, she developed UKM Dina, a traditional Bima woven fabric business founded in 2015 to empower weavers in her home village of Ntobo.

What began as social media posts about her family's woven textiles quickly turned into a steady stream of orders. Yuyun expanded her business by providing capital and marketing support to local weavers. Today, more than 200 weavers and 15 tailors have joined UKM Dina, generating meaningful growth for the local economy.

The business has even reached international markets, and UKM Dina's presence now attracts visitors who want to witness the traditional weaving process firsthand.

2. Desa Sejahtera Astra

Desa Sejahtera Astra is a program focused on entrepreneurship development built around the unique potential and signature products of each village. Launched in 2018, the program brings together a wide range of stakeholders, including central and regional governments, universities, communities, start-ups, and Village Cooperative Unit (KUD).

The program has successfully driven the development of flagship products from Astra-mentored villages across three main clusters: agriculture and processed agricultural products, marine and fisheries, and tourism, craft, and culture.

3. Hydroponic Cultivation Development Program

Yayasan Astra - Yayasan Pendidikan Astra Michael D. Ruslim (YPA MDR) initiated the Hydroponic Cultivation Development Program to nurture environmental awareness and an entrepreneurial spirit among vocational high school (SMK) students. The program runs in two formats: General Hydroponics for schools growing vegetables, and Specialized Hydroponics for SMKs integrated with a Teaching Factory (TeFa) under the Agribusiness program.

In 2024, the Astra Foundation successfully implemented the program across 80 schools in various regions, producing hydroponic vegetables and melons, with more than 79 schools achieving a successful harvest.

4. Astra for Creative Indonesia Pillar

Through the Astra untuk Indonesia Kreatif pillar, Astra focuses on developing MSMEs that supply the Astra Group, MSMEs located near Astra's installations, rural community-based entrepreneurship networks, and start-ups, all under the Creating Shared Value (CSV) concept.

Through this entrepreneurship program, Astra empowers small business owners and start-ups through training, institutional strengthening, production equipment assistance, and market access, with the aim of building MSME self-reliance.

5. Astranauts Program

Astra also runs the Astranauts program, an initiative managed by the Group Digital Strategy division to accelerate the growth of MSMEs and start-ups in the sustainable economy sector through technology. Astra firmly believes that supporting entrepreneurship and MSMEs is a key step in strengthening the local economy.
