Bagikan:

In recent years, the use of electric vehicles has continued to grow steadily. This trend is driven not only by technological innovation, but also by the many advantages of electric cars that make them an increasingly attractive option.

Growing awareness around environmental responsibility has also encouraged drivers to make the switch from fossil fuel-powered vehicles to cleaner electric alternatives.

Beyond being eco-friendly, electric cars also offer a wide range of additional benefits, from lower operational costs to a smoother, more refined driving experience. Read on for the full breakdown.

What Is an Electric Car?

Before diving deeper into the various advantages of electric vehicles, it is worth understanding what actually sets these cars apart from their conventional counterparts.

Put simply, an electric car is a vehicle whose drivetrain is fully, or largely, powered by an electric motor, drawing its energy from a rechargeable battery.

Unlike vehicles equipped with an internal combustion engine that rely on petrol or diesel, electric cars do not perform any combustion process within the engine.

Instead, the electrical energy stored in a high-capacity battery pack is delivered directly to the motor that drives the wheels, producing responsive performance with zero exhaust emissions.

Types of Electric Vehicles

Before deciding to buy, it is important to understand that not all electrified vehicles are the same. Here are the three most popular categories:

  • Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV): A car powered entirely by batteries and an electric motor, with no petrol engine whatsoever.
  • Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV): Combines a conventional petrol engine with an electric motor to improve overall fuel efficiency.
  • Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV): Similar to a hybrid, but features a larger battery that can be recharged via an external power source.

Key Advantages of Electric Cars to Know Before Buying

Electric vehicles offer a range of advantages that can elevate your driving experience, from environmental benefits to genuinely responsive performance. Here is the breakdown.

1. Better for the Environment

Electric cars are highly effective at reducing the impact of global warming. On average, an EV produces only around 4,100 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO₂) per year, far lower than petrol-powered vehicles, which can generate up to 11,435 pounds of CO₂ annually.

In addition, electric cars do not release direct emissions such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, or harmful particulate matter from the exhaust, supporting global net zero emission targets.

2. A Significantly Quieter Cabin

Unlike conventional cars that rely on internal combustion engines, electric vehicles run on motors that produce almost no audible noise.

The result is a calmer, more peaceful journey for both driver and passengers, which can also help reduce fatigue on long trips.

3. Advanced Technology and Features

Electric cars come equipped with cutting-edge features such as the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), which allows you to control your car directly from your smartphone; locking and unlocking doors, switching on the air conditioning, or even tracking the vehicle's location.

Most electric cars are also fitted with a digital cockpit, a large display screen that presents key information such as battery status, energy efficiency, and trip data in real time.

4. Advanced Safety Systems

Today's electric cars are equipped with sophisticated safety systems, including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). These features make driving safer through automatic emergency braking, blind spot sensors, and lane-keeping reminders.

You also do not need to worry about short-circuits or overheating; EV batteries undergo a battery of extreme durability tests, including water immersion and impact testing.

5. Smoother Acceleration

One of the most-loved qualities of electric cars is the driving sensation itself. EVs deliver maximum torque the moment you press the accelerator, giving you a remarkably responsive feel from the very start.

This smoother acceleration translates into greater control for the driver, particularly when overtaking other vehicles or accelerating up an incline.

6. Lower Operational Costs

One of the primary reasons electric cars are gaining traction is the significantly lower cost of fuel. On average, the electricity needed to cover a given distance costs only about a third of the equivalent petrol expense.

For comparison, charging the battery at a Public Electric Vehicle Charging Station (SPKLU) costs roughly IDR 2,466 per kWh, while RON 92 petrol can reach around IDR 13,000 per litre. As a rough conversion, 1 litre of petrol is equivalent to about 1.2–1.3 kWh of electricity.

In practical terms, that means you would spend approximately IDR 3,000 on electricity to travel the same distance that would cost IDR 13,000 on petrol.

7. Simpler Maintenance

Electric cars have far fewer drivetrain components than conventional vehicles. There is no need for routine oil changes, spark plug replacements, or complex transmission servicing.

With fewer parts that can wear out or fail, scheduled maintenance becomes more affordable, and trips to the workshop are far less frequent.

8. Exempt from Odd-Even Plate Restrictions

Beyond lower annual taxes, electric vehicles enjoy another important privilege: exemption from Jakarta's odd-even licence plate restrictions.

EVs are permitted to travel along main thoroughfares at any time, without the worry of fines or having to seek out longer alternative routes.

Build a Sustainable, Eco-Friendly Future by Switching to Electric Cars

Those are just some of the advantages of electric cars worth considering. Understanding these benefits makes it clear that switching to an EV opens the door to more economical and environmentally responsible mobility.

What's particularly encouraging is that this transition isn't being driven by government policy alone. As a national business group operating in the automotive sector, Astra is also playing a major role in accelerating Indonesia's green energy transition.

This commitment is reflected in the Astra Sustainability Report 2025, in which Astra reaffirms its support for the Indonesian government's target of achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060.

This is evident in Astra's milestone of introducing 22 electrified vehicle (xEV) models to the market, including Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) and Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV).
