What Is a Gender Equality Program?

A gender equality program is a structured set of policies, incentives, and activities designed to ensure that women and men enjoy equal opportunity, treatment, and access in the workplace.

These programs address not only representation but also the quality of participation and growth opportunities. They aim to create conditions where individuals can develop based on competence and potential, free from stereotypes or structural barriers.

This approach has now become an important foundation for building a healthy and sustainable work environment.

Why Gender Equality Programs Matter for Modern Companies

In business and sustainability, gender equality has an impact that extends beyond social issues. Companies that strategically implement gender equality programs often achieve stronger organizational performance.

These programs are important for modern companies for several reasons:

  • Strengthening Competitiveness and Innovation: An inclusive environment fosters fresh ideas and more effective collaboration.
  • Improving Leadership and Decision-Making: A diversity of perspectives helps a company view challenges from many different angles.
  • Boosting Employee Retention and Engagement: Employees who feel they are treated fairly tend to be more loyal and more productive.
  • Supporting ESG Performance and Corporate Reputation: Gender equality is an important part of the social dimension within the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework.

Examples of Gender Equality Programs in Astra's Sustainability Practices

Astra has integrated gender equality into its human resource management strategy as part of its commitment to sustainability. These initiatives are designed to create an inclusive and equitable workplace.

Below are examples of gender equality programs implemented by the Astra Group.

1. Astra Women's Community

The Astra Women's Community is dedicated to developing and empowering women leaders. Its goal is to increase the number of women leaders at Astra by supporting career growth, professional networking, and well-being throughout the company.

This community fosters an inclusive work culture that supports work-life balance and prevents discrimination and harassment. It also runs the Astra Women Networks program, which further develops and empowers women within Astra.

Key initiatives of the community include:

  • In-Class Training (Ignite The Impact of Women Leaders): Focused on exploring and building the skills needed to strengthen the impact of women's leadership.
  • Mentoring Session (AWESOME): A dedicated mentoring session with Astra Women Executives across the Astra Group, using one-on-one and group mentoring methods to explore selected topics around strengthening women's leadership.
  • Networking Session (SISTEAHOOD): A networking session with fellow participants and mentors from the mentoring sessions, offering a refresher on the topics already covered.

2. Astra Women Leaders Development Program

The Astra Women Leaders Development Program accelerates women's careers and prepares them for leadership roles. Astra uses this program to increase the representation of women at managerial and board levels.

In 2024, 5,112 women held supervisor-level or higher positions at Astra, representing 19.35 percent of the workforce, supported by the Women Employee Development Program. Additionally, 34 women held board-level positions, accounting for 17.35 percent of all board members through the Women Leaders Development Program.
