Bagikan:

You often hear the term energy efficiency, especially in the context of industry and sustainability. Amid the challenges of climate change and the need to reduce carbon emissions, this concept has become an important strategy that not only saves costs but also helps preserve the environment.

Basically, this concept optimizes energy usage to achieve the same or better output using less energy. If you want to learn more about the concept of energy efficiency, read this article until the end!

Definition of Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency minimizes energy waste without sacrificing the quality or quantity of production results. In industry, efficiency is achieved by optimizing production processes, using energy-efficient equipment, and managing resources wisely.

In other words, energy efficiency means not only saving electricity or fuel but also maximizing output with fewer inputs. As a result, companies can reduce operational costs, decrease dependence on fossil energy, and minimize environmental impacts.

In Indonesia, the government encourages the implementation of this concept through policies and regulations, including setting targets to reduce national energy intensity. This effort aligns with global commitments to reduce carbon emissions under the Paris Agreement.

Benefits of Energy Efficiency for Industry

Energy efficiency offers significant benefits, particularly in the industrial sector, where companies consume substantial energy. Some key benefits when companies implement this concept on a large scale include:

  • Reducing Operational Costs: Efficient energy use means paying less for electricity, fuel, or other energy sources.
  • Increasing Competitiveness: Companies that operate efficiently tend to have lower production costs, allowing them to offer more competitive prices.
  • Supporting Net Zero Targets: Energy efficiency directly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, which is a target for many companies, including Astra.
  • Improving Corporate Reputation: Consumers and partners today are more aware of environmental issues. Companies that adopt energy efficiency are seen as responsible.
  • Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Companies can reduce the energy they obtain from coal and petroleum sources, thereby lowering their carbon footprint.
  • Improving Performance: Energy efficiency can enhance the performance of systems and devices, enabling longer lifespans and requiring less maintenance.
  • Enhancing Energy Security: Reducing dependence on scarce or hazardous energy resources can help strengthen a country’s energy security.

Examples of Energy Efficiency in Daily Life

Today, there are many examples of energy efficiency in everyday life, both on small and large scales. Below are several examples worth knowing.

1. Using LED Lighting

Use LED lighting at home or in the office to improve energy efficiency. Choose LED lights because they generate less heat than incandescent lamps. LEDs also last much longer, reaching 25,000 hours, or about 25 times longer than incandescent lamps.

2. Using Automatic Chargers

Modern technology enables many phone and laptop chargers to operate automatically. Automatic chargers stop charging once the device battery becomes fully charged. This practice helps maintain healthier batteries and saves energy.

3. Cooking with an Induction Stove

Induction stoves can transfer energy with up to 90% efficiency, which greatly exceeds the 40% efficiency of gas stoves. This difference shows that using gas stoves can waste up to 6 times more energy than using induction stoves.

4. Installing Energy-Efficient Windows

Energy-efficient windows minimize heat leakage. These windows help reduce the need for heating or cooling systems. For this reason, installing energy-efficient windows in homes is another way to implement energy efficiency.

5. Saving Water Usage

Save water in everyday activities to also contribute to energy efficiency. Try these simple actions:

  • Wash fruits and vegetables in a basin instead of under running water.
  • Regularly check water pipes to ensure you do not waste water through leaks.
  • Use a reasonable amount of detergent or soap, and rinse thoroughly with plenty of water.
  • Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth.

Triple-P Roadmap: Astra’s Sustainability Strategy to Maximize Energy Efficiency

Astra integrates energy efficiency into the Triple-P Roadmap, which includes:

  • Portfolio Roadmap: Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing renewable energy mix, and increasing non-coal revenue.
  • People Roadmap: Developing employee competencies in sustainability.
  • Public Contribution Roadmap: Empowering communities through social and environmental programs.

In the context of energy efficiency, Astra aims to reduce Scope 1 & 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 30% from the 2019 baseline by 2030. Additionally, Astra implements the Astra Green Company (AGC) framework as a guideline for environmentally friendly operations.

As a result, in 2024, Astra successfully reduced emissions by 17.41% compared with the 2019 baseline, largely due to energy efficiency improvements and increased renewable energy use.
