The women weavers from Sejahtera Astra Village in East Sumba produce traditional Sumba ikat textiles that reflect the community's cultural identity, local wisdom, and close connection to nature and ancestral traditions.
EAST SUMBA, EAST NUSA TENGGARA: PT Astra International Tbk ("Astra") continues to develop Desa Sejahtera Astra Sumba Timur as a center for preserving Sumba's distinctive Tenun Ikat and advancing local women's economic empowerment.
Desa Sejahtera Astra Sumba Timur supports five weaving hub villages in East Sumba Regency: Kampung Raja Prailiu, Mbatakapidu, Mauliru, Lambanapu, and Kawangu. Since joining the Desa Sejahtera Astra program in 2025, the initiative has reached 1,295 residents, increased community income by 50%, created 67 new jobs, and achieved 100% market absorption of its products.
Currently, the Desa Sejahtera Astra Sumba Timur ecosystem includes approximately 250 artisans, 97% of whom are women. Through capacity building, product development, and expanded market access, Sumba's Tenun Ikat is preserved as cultural heritage and serves as a vital source of income for families and the community.
"Through Desa Sejahtera Astra, we believe every region has the potential to drive community well-being. In East Sumba, preserving Tenun Ikat not only protects cultural heritage but also creates broader economic opportunities, especially for women, through enhanced capacity, market access, and sustainable collaboration," said Astra Chief of Corporate Affairs Boy Kelana Soebroto.
The progress of Desa Sejahtera Astra Sumba Timur is further supported by Reza Permadi, the recipient of the 2023 SATU Indonesia Awards. Through his Digital Transformation for Sustainable Tourism, Culture & Heritage initiative, Reza promotes digital transformation in tourism villages by implementing a visitor management system that enhances operational efficiency and increases destination visibility in domestic and international markets. The initiative also broadens digital market access for small and medium enterprises (UMKM), especially Sumba Tenun Ikat artisans, by integrating technology with local wisdom to improve competitiveness.
Reza applies a multidisciplinary approach to tourism village development, guiding the community to adopt technology effectively throughout the process. His model enables the standardization of handicraft products for export and strengthens village entrepreneurship through digital business units. This initiative supports the growth of the village's tourism and creative economy ecosystem while preserving East Sumba's cultural identity.
Astra's commitment to cultural preservation, community empowerment, and local development reflects its aspiration to Prosper With the Nation and supports Indonesia's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
