SINGKAWANG, WEST KALIMANTAN: Through the Desa Sejahtera Astra program, Astra strengthens batik‑making activities as a source of livelihood for villagers by applying a community‑based approach and a sustainable production system in Desa Sejahtera Astra Singkawang, West Kalimantan.

In Singkawang, batik craftsmanship has developed and become part of the community’s local economic activities. To ensure its economic benefits are both sustainable and far-reaching, stronger management, enhanced human capital capacity, and a more structured production system are needed. Since 2021, Astra—through the Desa Sejahtera Astra program—has supported the Singkawang community in strengthening human capital and building a more independent production foundation rooted in local potential.

“Astra’s support through Desa Sejahtera Astra aims to build community capacity and establish collaborative work and production systems, enabling village economic activities to run more effectively and sustainably. The initiatives in Desa Sejahtera Astra Singkawang are expected to deliver tangible benefits for the community, in line with Astra’s mission to Prosper with the Nation,” said Djony Bunarto Tjondro, President Director of Astra.

In advancing batik development in Singkawang, village local champion Priska Yeniriatno plays a pivotal role. Drawing from her experience in independently developing batik activities, Priska has championed human capital development to ensure that batik‑making skills do not remain with individuals alone, but can be transferred, replicated, and collectively managed by the community.

To date, batik‑making activities have contributed to a 50% increase in community production output and opened up more sustainable livelihood opportunities for residents of Desa Sejahtera Astra Singkawang.

“For me, the most significant impact is the community’s consistency in staying productive through batik‑making. Today, some of them have even opened their own workshops and are receiving various external engagements to share knowledge about the batik they have developed. In my view, this is the most remarkable outcome,” said Priska Yeniriatno, a Desa Sejahtera Astra local champion.

To date, the program has engaged more than 240 batik artisans across 18 active production groups, while also encouraging the growth of independent workshops and batik education activities within the surrounding community.

The full story of Priska Yeniriatno’s journey in driving change in Desa Sejahtera Astra Singkawang is available on the SATU Indonesia YouTube channel.

Astra’s commitment to strengthening communities through local potential development under the Desa Sejahtera Astra program aligns with Astra’s mission to Prosper with the Nation and supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Indonesia.
