SUKABUMI, WEST JAVA: Desa Sejahtera Astra Gede Pangrango leverages local resources, from sawo sambal to palm sugar and river tubing, to benefit the community. Located near Mount Gede Pangrango, the village advances its economy, protects the environment, and strengthens community life through these integrated activities.
Covering nearly 999.40 hectares and home to 7,627 residents, Desa Sejahtera Astra Gede Pangrango features diverse natural terrain. Its proximity to Mount Gede Pangrango National Park, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, enables opportunities for nature and community-based tourism.
The village has grown through collaboration between residents and partners, including the Desa Sejahtera Astra program by PT Astra International Tbk ("Astra"), which supports development in health, education, environment, and entrepreneurship.
"Through Desa Sejahtera Astra, we believe every village has unique potential to develop according to its character and needs. In Desa Sejahtera Astra Gede Pangrango, Astra and the community continue to advance local potential in health, education, environment, and entrepreneurship. We hope this collaboration strengthens the village's self-reliance and ensures lasting benefits from its natural resources," said Astra Chief of Corporate Affairs Boy Kelana Soebroto.
Health initiatives include enhanced Posyandu activities and regular health checks at the local Puskesmas. In education, children develop creativity and skills through arts and music programs such as angklung and drumband.
Environmental efforts are integrated with community creativity. Waste management includes sorting and repurposing, such as transforming discarded PVC pipes into miniature vehicles, demonstrating how waste can become valuable materials.
Entrepreneurship transforms natural resources into value-added products that support the local economy. Sawo fruit is processed into sawo sambal, and palm sugar is a signature product of local small businesses. Tourism further boosts economic opportunities through river tubing and village tours that highlight the area's natural beauty.
These initiatives establish Desa Sejahtera Astra Gede Pangrango as a leading tourism village. In addition to nature trails and tours, the village offers programs in tour packages, waste management, stunting prevention, and Arumba music. It has received the Indonesia Tourism Village Award from 2021 through 2024 and the 2024 National Proklim Award (Utama category).
Through Desa Sejahtera Astra, Astra and the Gede Pangrango community remain committed to further developing this potential and ensuring its long-term benefits.
Astra's collaboration with communities such as Desa Sejahtera Astra Gede Pangrango reflects its broader vision of shared prosper with the nation and its support for Indonesia's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
