Definition of Safety Golden Rules

In general, safety golden rules are fundamental rules that must be followed by everyone in the workplace environment to ensure safety. These rules are called “golden” because they are absolute and must never be violated under any circumstances.

In the 10 ACSET SHE Golden Rules, it is stated that these rules serve as the basic guidelines for all employees when performing activities to ensure occupational health and safety.

Goals of Safety Golden Rules

The main objectives of implementing these rules include the following.

  • Preventing Fatal Accidents: Many major industrial incidents begin with small oversights. With strict rules in place, the potential for accidents can be minimized.
  • Building a Safety Culture: These rules are not merely written regulations but have become part of daily habits and workplace culture.
  • Protecting Workers and Companies: Well-maintained safety measures increase productivity and help companies avoid costs associated with workplace accidents.

In other words, safety golden rules serve as the main foundation of a workplace safety management system.

Core Principles in Safety Golden Rules

Each company may have its own version of safety golden rules. However, in general, the core principles are as follows.

1. Mandatory Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Helmets, gloves, protective glasses, and safety shoes must be worn at all times, depending on the type of work being performed.

2. No Work Without a Permit (Permit to Work): High-risk activities must be carried out only with official permits, such as electrical work, welding, or work in confined spaces.

3. Lock Out – Tag Out (LOTO) During Machine Maintenance: Machines must be turned off, locked, and labeled before maintenance is performed to prevent inadvertent activation.

4. No Entry into Hazardous Areas Without Authorization: High-risk areas may be accessed only by authorized, trained personnel.

5. Fall Prevention When Working at Height: Any work conducted at height must use standard safety systems such as harnesses and lifelines.

10 Golden Rules of Safety ACSET

The ACSET Golden Rules of Safety, also known as the SHE Golden Rules, consist of 10 rules that must be implemented by all staff at ACSET headquarters and project sites. These rules include:

1. Mandatory use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as helmets, safety shoes, and safety vests when entering project areas.

2. Smoking is prohibited except in designated smoking areas.

3. Carrying firearms, sharp weapons, alcohol, narcotics, psychotropic substances, and addictive substances is strictly prohibited.

4. Operators of heavy equipment and lifting equipment must possess valid Operator Permits (SIO) and Operational Feasibility Certificates (SILO) and must operate under supervision.

5. When working at heights above 1.8 meters, workers must use a full-body safety harness with double lanyards, attaching both hooks while working or at least one hook while moving or changing position.

6. Only scaffolding with green tagging may be used.

7. Electrical equipment must be inspected and tagged according to the monthly inspection color code.

8. Entering barricaded areas during lifting operations is strictly prohibited.

9. Materials and work equipment must not be placed less than one meter from the perimeter or within access routes.

10. Workers are required to issue warnings or stop work immediately if any violations of the golden rules are found.

All of these rules involve activities that may pose fatal risks (high-risk hazards) if not followed. Therefore, every employee or new worker entering the ACSET work environment must receive safety induction and socialization regarding the 10 golden rules of safety.

At the end of each socialization session, employees or workers are required to sign a commitment form as proof that they understand and agree to comply with these rules.

Benefits of Implementing Safety Golden Rules

There are many benefits experienced by both employees and companies, including the following.

  • Preventing Workplace Accidents: Clear rules help everyone remain vigilant, reducing the likelihood of accidents and injuries for all staff.
  • Increasing Productivity: A safe workplace allows employees to work confidently and efficiently, minimizing disruptions that can slow down operations.
  • Reducing Operational Costs: Fewer workplace accidents lower expenses from medical care, equipment damage, compensation, and work stoppages.
  • Enhancing Corporate Reputation: Companies known for prioritizing safety attract investor, partner, and customer trust, supporting future growth.
  • Supporting Sustainability: Safety is part of corporate social responsibility and long-term sustainability.

How to Implement Safety Golden Rules in Companies

To ensure that safety golden rules are not merely slogans, their implementation must be carried out consistently. Several steps that can be taken include:

  • Regular Socialization and Training: Ensure all employees understand the rules and their objectives.
  • Integration into SOPs: Incorporate these rules into operational procedures to make them part of everyday routines.
  • Supervision and Periodic Inspections: Conduct safety audits to ensure compliance.
  • Consistent Discipline Enforcement: Violations of safety golden rules must be addressed firmly to maintain safety standards.
  • Leadership Example: Safety culture strengthens when leaders actively model safe behavior.
