What Is a Hybrid Car

A hybrid car is a vehicle that uses two main power sources. It combines an internal combustion engine, typically a gasoline engine, with an electric motor. Both systems work together to boost fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and improve driving performance.

This vehicle automatically selects the most suitable power mode based on driving conditions. At low speeds or in traffic, it may use the electric motor. When more power is needed, such as when driving uphill, it switches to the gasoline engine.

This concept enables more efficient fuel consumption and a lower carbon footprint than conventional vehicles that rely solely on gasoline or diesel engines.

Types of Hybrid Cars

Currently, several types of hybrid cars are available in the automotive market, each with distinct characteristics and advantages.

1. Mild-Hybrid

The mild-hybrid system typically uses an additional battery with relatively small capacity. This system primarily assists the engine during initial acceleration, when the workload is heavier.

This system does not use a separate electric motor. Instead, it optimizes starter-generator components. These combine the starter motor and the alternator, both of which are attached to the engine.

2. Full-Hybrid

This system primarily uses gasoline as its main energy source. However, to provide additional power, the vehicle also uses an electric motor.

For this reason, full-hybrid cars use the electric motor as the primary power source at low speeds. The goal is to make the vehicle more efficient in situations such as traffic congestion.

At cruising speed, the gasoline engine provides drive. When braking, the electric motor acts as a generator, charging the battery.

3. Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV)

The mechanism of this hybrid system is somewhat similar to a full-hybrid. However, this type of car offers a longer driving range using the electric motor because it has a larger battery capacity.

In Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV), you can recharge the battery by plugging it in at home or at public electric vehicle charging stations (SPKLU).

Advantages of Hybrid Cars

You may wonder why you should choose a hybrid car instead of a conventional one. Here are several advantages you can consider.

1. More Fuel Efficient

Because they use electric motors in various conditions, hybrid cars consume less gasoline. This is especially beneficial for daily travel or driving in heavy traffic.

2. Lower Emissions

Hybrid cars help reduce air pollution because their carbon emissions are significantly lower than those of conventional vehicles.

3. More Comfortable Driving Experience

The transition between electric and gasoline power is very smooth. Engine noise is quieter and vibration is minimal. Acceleration response is more refined. These features make driving more comfortable.

4. More Environmentally Friendly

Choosing a hybrid car helps lower greenhouse gas emissions. It also supports sustainable initiatives.

Astra’s Commitment to Hybrid Cars and Eco-Friendly Vehicles

As a national business group operating in the automotive sector, Astra actively responds to the trend of vehicle electrification. Through various subsidiaries such as Toyota Astra Motor, Astra Daihatsu Motor, and Isuzu Astra Motor Indonesia, Astra actively markets, manufactures, and supports the development of hybrid and electric vehicles.

In the Astra Sustainability Report 2024, Astra reaffirmed support for the Indonesian government’s 2060 Net Zero Emissions target. A key step is developing low-carbon transportation, especially electric, hybrid, and hydrogen vehicles.

This is evident in Astra’s achievement of developing 22 electric vehicle models (xEV), including battery-electric vehicles (BEV) and hybrid-electric vehicles (HEV).
