What Is Gender Equality

Gender equality is a condition where women and men have equal rights, responsibilities, and opportunities in all aspects of life. This includes areas such as education, employment, politics, and personal life.

However, this concept does not mean making all individuals exactly the same. Rather, it ensures that a person’s gender does not become a barrier to achieving their full potential and contributions.

In this context, gender equality is an essential prerequisite for sustainable development and social justice. In Indonesia, efforts to achieve equality are also included in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 5, which aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

Why Is Gender Equality Important

Gender equality is not only about fairness but also represents a strategic investment in sustainable development. Here are several reasons why this concept is so important.

1. Economic Growth

Various studies show that countries or organizations that empower women equally tend to have higher productivity and innovation. For example, equal employment opportunities can significantly increase a country’s GDP.

2. Social Empowerment

By providing equal opportunities, women can actively contribute to decision-making processes, both within families and in society. This helps create stronger and more equitable communities.

3. Justice and Human Rights

Gender equality is a fundamental human right. Therefore, gender should not determine the quality of education, career opportunities, or a person’s level of well-being.

4. Inclusive Work Environment

Companies that practice gender inclusion have been shown to have better employee retention rates. In addition, they can create healthier and more innovative workplace cultures.

The Impact of Gender Equality Across Various Aspects of Life

Below are several impacts that can be experienced across different aspects of life when gender equality is implemented.

1. Impact in the Workplace

Gender equality opens opportunities for women to hold strategic positions, including managerial roles and board seats. This increases diversity in decision-making, which can positively impact company performance.

At Astra, the principles of inclusion and equality have also been applied in human resource development. For example, by encouraging women’s participation across various sectors, including leadership roles.

One example is the Astra Women Leaders Development Program, designed to promote women’s leadership, strengthen women’s roles in strategic decision-making, and build an inclusive, innovative, and adaptive organizational culture. In 2024, at least 34 women leaders served as directors within the Astra Group, representing 17.35% of the total number of directors in the Astra Group.

2. Impact in Education

Equal access to education allows all individuals to have fair opportunities to acquire knowledge and skills. This is crucial for building a highly competitive future generation.

3. Impact on Families and Communities

When women gain equal access to education and economic opportunities, the quality of family life improves. Empowered women are also more likely to encourage children’s education and become agents of change within their communities.

Challenges in Achieving Gender Equality

Although much progress has been made, several challenges still hinder the full realization of gender equality in Indonesia. Some of these challenges include:

  • Patriarchal Social Norms: Cultural traditions that place men at the center of power remain strong in several regions.
  • Limited Access to Education and Technology: In remote areas, women still face difficulties accessing equal education and training opportunities.
  • Lack of Female Representation in Decision-Making Positions: Many industries remain dominated by men at leadership levels.

Astra’s Commitment to Gender Equality

As one of the largest national companies in Indonesia, Astra understands that diversity and inclusion are key elements of sustainable development. Astra has implemented various initiatives to support gender equality, both internally in the workplace and externally through corporate social responsibility programs.

Below are examples of gender equality initiatives implemented by Astra.

1. Diversity and Inclusivity Among Employees and Management

Astra supports diversity and inclusivity among employees, including at executive and commissioner levels, with a focus on gender equality. This reflects Astra’s strong commitment to promoting gender equality in the workplace.

In 2024, the Women Employee Development Program provided leadership training and networking opportunities for 5,112 female supervisors and above, totaling 19.35% of Astra Group’s employees at that level. At the director level, 34 female leaders, making up 17.35% of Astra Group directors, participated in the Women Leaders Development Program that included tailored development initiatives for executive readiness.

Both programs are part of the Astra For Everyone initiative, which prioritizes diversity, equality, and inclusion with a focus on gender.

2. Non-Discrimination by Upholding Diversity

Astra is committed to maintaining diversity within the company to support effective business growth. The company also ensures inclusivity and equal opportunities for all employees while opposing discrimination for any reason.

Astra is committed to providing equal treatment to all employees, regardless of ethnicity, race, religion, or social background. This commitment promotes gender equality and supports the elimination of discrimination.

In addition, Astra provides maternity leave for female employees and paternity leave for male employees to accompany their wives during childbirth, in accordance with applicable regulations.

3. Astra Women Community

The Astra Women Community serves as a platform for developing and empowering women’s leadership. Its goal is to increase the number of women leaders within Astra through various initiatives that encourage career development, professional networking, and well-being.

The community also focuses on fostering an inclusive work culture that supports work-life balance while preventing discrimination and harassment. The Astra Women Community runs a program called Astra Women Networks for women’s development and empowerment within the Astra work environment.

Some initiatives under this program include:

  • Astra Women Leaders Development Program: Preparing female employees for higher leadership roles.
  • In-Class Training (Ignite The Impact of Women Leader): Training and discussions to strengthen women’s leadership impact.
