By definition, K3 stands for Occupational Safety and Health. The term includes all efforts to prevent workplace accidents and occupational diseases, and create safe and comfortable working conditions for all employees.
In Indonesia, K3 regulations are governed by Law No. 1 of 1970 on Occupational Safety (Undang-Undang Nomor 1 Tahun 1970 tentang Keselamatan Kerja) and Government Regulation No. 50 of 2012 on the Implementation of the Occupational Safety and Health Management System (SMK3) (Peraturan Pemerintah Nomor 50 Tahun 2012 about Penerapan Sistem Manajemen Keselamatan dan Kesehatan Kerja (SMK3)), supported by various additional regulations.
K3 isn’t just about physical protection. It’s also a smart way to minimize financial risks and keep your business running seamlessly.
The implementation of K3 is a comprehensive effort that covers various aspects and is not limited to the use of personal protective equipment. In general, the scope of K3 includes:
Below are several important objectives of implementing K3 in the workplace.
The primary goal of K3 is to prevent workplace accidents and injuries. This can be achieved by ensuring that workplace equipment and facilities are safe and well-maintained.
Additionally, employees are provided with training on how to avoid risks of accidents and injuries while working.
K3 also aims to maintain employees’ health and well-being at work. This is done by providing the facilities employees need, such as healthcare services (routine medical checkups and counseling), and by implementing fitness programs and promoting healthy lifestyles.
Ensuring employee safety in the workplace is another important objective. This can be implemented by ensuring every employee works in safe conditions and avoids the risk of accidents or injuries.
By creating a safe and healthy work environment, employee productivity and performance will naturally increase. Employees who feel safe and healthy at work tend to be more motivated to work productively and efficiently.
By preventing workplace accidents and injuries, another objective of K3 is to reduce the costs associated with such incidents. These costs include medical expenses, disability benefits, and compensation for employees affected by workplace accidents or injuries.

2. Protecting Human Resources (HR): Employees are the company’s main asset. With K3, companies can ensure the safety of workers operating heavy equipment or working in high-risk environments.
3. Increasing Productivity: A safe work environment allows employees to focus better and work more comfortably.
4. Improving Company Reputation: Proper implementation of K3 can enhance the company’s image in the eyes of clients, investors, and regulators.
Simply put, the importance of K3 goes well beyond caring for people; it’s also the secret to keeping business running strong, day after day.

This program includes several criteria used as references for assessing LK3 performance across the Astra Group, including:
Periodically, the Astra Group evaluates AGC implementation through self-assessments, group assessments, and company assessments. The results are classified into five rankings: black, red, blue, green, and gold. In 2024, the AGC assessment covered 798 company installations across the Astra Group.
The results showed that 96.2% achieved Blue, Green, and Gold rankings. The AGC implementation also contributed to outstanding environmental performance, as reflected in the Corporate Performance Rating Assessment Program (PROPER) by the Ministry of Environment/Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH).
Within this program, Green rating indicates performance beyond compliance, and Blue rating indicates compliance with regulations. These achievements were reflected in 5 Green PROPER ratings and 70 Blue PROPER ratings.
