Through YPA-MDR, Astra Hands Over 50 Schools

South Lampung: PT Astra International through Yayasan Pendidikan Astra- Michael D. Ruslim (YPA-MDR) had renovated and completed facilities of 50 schools, including two fostered schools in misfortune areas in South Lampung.

Director of PT Astra International Tbk Paulus Bambang Widjarnarko handed over two schools to Regent of South Lampung Zainudin Hasan today (21/3). The two schools are SMPN 1 Tanjungsari located in Tanjungsari Subdistrict and SMPN 2 Merbau Mataram located in Merbau Mataram Subdistrict, South Lampung.

Zainudin Hasan said that hopefully the students would become a minister and even president. “Besides, let’s pray for Astra to be more prosperous ahead,”

With Astra’s donation through YPA-MDR, he said, the participated students in South Lampung would be well performance children and useful for their surroundings as well as be able to build their hometown.

“Astra through YPA-MDR help schools in misfortune areas to help improving education of smart, independent and caring nation’s children who would later build their own hometown,” said Paulus Bambang Widjanarko after handing over the school building.

Since 2010, Astra had given donation to 10 elementary schools in South Lampung, namely 5 elementary schools in Tanjungsari Subdistrict (SDN 1 Kertosari, SDN 2 Kertosari, SDN 3 Kertosari, SDN 1 Mulyosari, SDN 1 Wonodadi) and the 5 others in Merbau Mataram Subdistrict (SDN 1 Merbau Mataram, SDN 2 Merbau Mataram, SDN 3 Merbau Mataram, SDN 4 Merbau Mataram and SDN 1 Triharjo). In 2011, the donation had elevated to another level, which was SMPN 1 Tanjungsari and SMPN 1 Merbau Mataram.

50 Schools in Indonesia

Since its 10 year-establishment, YPA-MDR helped and fostered 50 public schools, 699 teachers and 11,242 students. 50 fostered schools consists of 38 elementary schools, 9 junior high schools and 3 vocational high schools located in Bogor, Gunungkidul, Bantul, South Lampung, Pacitan, West Kutai and Serang. In the near future, YPA-MDR will also broaden its service areas to eastern Indonesia, namely East Nusa Tenggara.

The donation programs presented by YPA-MDR to fostered schools cover:

  • Four-pillar development, namely: Education, character building, life skills and art & culture towards self-governing schools
  • Education support such as lesson books for students, guide books for teachers, library books, school healthcare unit tools as well as props and learning media.
  • The addition of room infrastructure and building renovation along with furniture to ensure proper and qualified teaching and learning activity.

Rp 7.2 Billion Renovation

During founding phase, these junior high schools showed good improvement. Therefore, Astra initiatively continues to provide help by upgrading and renovating schools building to elevate teaching and learning quality.

The renovation started on August 2015 and completed on January 2016 with total cost of Rp 7.2 billion, detailed as Rp 5.9 billion for building and Rp 1.3 billion for furniture and other equipment.

SMPN 1 Tanjungsari’s renovation took place on 15,500 m2 ground area and 2.800 m2 building area, while SMPN 2 Merbau’s renovation which took place on 12,400 m2 ground area and 2,000 m2 building area include renovation of lesson rooms, OSIS room, science lab, teacher room, headmaster room, administration room, counseling room, library, computer room, school healthcare unit and teacher bathroom as well as pantry.

Through continuous founding, these schools have shown their achievements. Today, schools, teachers and students who have performed best during 2015/2016 were given token of appreciation. SMPN 1 Tanjungsari took the 1st place on National Examination, modern dance, short story writing, Quran reading and best-performing teachers to continue to province level as well as 2nd place at traditional music field on Regency stage. This school has also been pointed as national Adiwiyata school (target to Adiwiyata Mandiri in 2017)

SMPN 2 Merbau Mataram also seized several number of competitions, namely the 2nd winner at painting on Province level, 3rd winner at traditional music and vocal group in Province level, 1st winner at vocal group, traditional music, song writing, batik pattern drawing, painting as well as 2nd winner at story telling and dance in Regency level, 3rd winner at Qoran and poetry reading in Regency level. The school also received Adiwayata School Awards in Regency level.

In elementary school level, these schools obtained some achievements, namely SDN 2 Kertosari, SDN 3 Kertosari and SDN 1 Triharjo received Adiwiyata Awards in Regency level. In addition, SDN 2 Kertosari and SDN 3 Merbau Mataram received Healthy School Award in Regency level.

SDN 1 Merbau Mataram became the 2nd winner at swimming competition in Province level, the 1st winner at Picture Story, 3rd winner at Indonesian Speech Contest and Poetry Writing. SDN 1 Triharjo won 2nd place of women chess and dance competition.

Besides performance improvement, these fostered schools also already have well trained teachers so that they can deliver the skills to other schools as tutor partners.

In principal, wherever it is, Astra must bring benefits to its surrounding, in accordance to the first philosophy of Catur Dharma, “To be an Asset to the Nation”. Since its establishment in 1957, Astra has been giving its works to improve the nation.

Director of PT Astra International Tbk Paulus Bambang (left) gave appreciation to one of the winners of best-performing fostered school as Rp 33,700,000. The total appreciation given by Astra through YPD-MDR was Rp 98,300,000 for SMP 1 Tanjungsari and SMPN 2 Merbau Mataram. The renovation for two school buildings started in August 2015 to January 2016 had spent Rp 7.2 billion, detailed as Rp 5.9 billion for building and Rp 1.3 billion for furniture and other equipment (21/3).
