The Excitement of Pramuka Island Astra Green Village Festival Commemorating World Environment Day

KEPULAUAN SERIBU: The rocking boat due to waves along the ride to Kepulauan Seribu gradually slows down as the speed boat departing from Marina Ancol Port reaches the dock. The scent of salty seawater combined with the warm touch of the morning sun that day accompanies a middle-aged woman welcoming Astra in Pramuka Island Astra Green Village (Kampung Berseri Astra).

Her face is calm, and her words are neatly-structured yet sharp just like small waves take turns sweeping the beach. Her passion is so strong that every visitor in Pramuka Island can feel Mahariah's sincerity and concern towards the environment.

It is Mahariah, a Madrasah Ibtidaiah teacher who initiates an environment rescue movement for Pramuka Island residents.

On Saturday (29/6) and Sunday (30/6), Mahariah and Pramuka Island residents host the Astra Green Village Festival with an environmental theme. Pramuka Island, becoming one of Astra Green Villages since 2015, is chosen as a venue to celebrate World Environment Day on June 5th.

Several activities take place in this festival, such as Environmental Seminar, Thousand Boats Carnival, Environmental Opera, Ecolibrium Music Festival, Culinary and Handcraft Bazaar, My Zero-Waste Island Movement (Gerakan Pulauku Nol Sampah), Marine Debris Clean Action, Inauguration of Pramuka Island Pranaraksa Center, Mangrove Planting, Releasing Baby Hawksbill Turtles, Eco-fashion Carnival, and many others.

These activities are attended by the Director of Forest Plant Seeding of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry Mintarjo, Head Division of Area 1 Assistant Deputy

Regional 2 Destination Development of Deputy of Tourism Destination Development Division of the Ministry of Tourism Wastuti, Deputy of Earth Science Division of Indonesia Science Institute (LIPI) Zainal Arifin, Regent of Kepulauan Seribu Husein Murad, Deputy Chief of Corporate Affairs PT Astra International Tbk Riza Deliansyah, and awardee of 2018 SATU Indonesia Awards Hanif Wicaksono.

Pramuka Island becomes the location for the second Astra Green Festival this year after the previous festival was held in Solok, West Sumatra, in April.

"Astra constantly tries to collaborate with as well as inspire the society. What Astra does in Pramuka Island Astra Green Village is in line with Astra’s aim to prosper with
the nation," said Riza Deliansyah.

This Astra Green Village Festival of environmental theme is held for 2 days. The first day is started by playing of My Zero-Waste Island video, environmental talk show, thousand papers recycle movement, also culinary and handcraft bazaar. On the second day, The Action Day of My Zero-Waste Island movement is done by cleaning the sea with a total of 134,91 kilograms of unsorted waste gathered from 16 designated zones. Furthermore, other activities that take place are the inauguration of Pranaraksa Center, mangrove planting, and fashion competition using recyclable wastes also known as eco-fashion carnival.

Astra Green Village is an area with a clean and green environment inhabited by a healthy, smart, and productive society that demonstrates four pillars of Astra’s sustainable social contribution: Education, Entrepreneurship, Environment, and Health.

Pramuka Island Astra Green Village becomes a place for Mahariah in pursuing a new life for the local people. The passion of Mahariah and Pramuka Island residents’ is in line with Astra’s aim to prosper with the nation.
