Spreading Healthy Smiles through the 13th SATU Indonesia Awards 2022

JAKARTA: There is a saying, “Experience is the best teacher”, which means people always learn from their experiences, both good and bad.

The phrase best describes the lives of two young people, Rahmad Maulizar and Jessica Mila. Rahmad is a recipient of the 2021 Semangat Astra Terpadu Untuk (SATU) Indonesia Awards from the health category, while Jessica is an artist and a film actress. Both Rahmad and Jessica learned from their pasts and decided to make a difference in their communities.

Through the event Inspiranation with the 13th SATU Indonesia Awards 2022, “Get Healthy Together Through Youth Innovation”, held virtually (15/4) with host Tarra Budiman, Rahmad shared his journey to give smiles to children with clefts in his hometown.

Rahmad himself had a cleft lip for 18 years before receiving free surgery in 2011. His newfound perfect smile gave him new hope in life. With Smile Train Indonesia, Rahmad dedicates himself to helping children get surgery to treat their clefts at Malahayati Hospital Banda Aceh so they too can smile again.

“After I knew how it felt to have a perfect smile, I wanted to give the same thing to people with cleft lip and cleft palate in Aceh,” said Rahmad about his current purpose in life.

Besides Rahmad, model and actress Jessica Mila also shared her story of supporting children with cancer through the #AnakKankerBisaSembuh campaign. Seeing her younger cousin did not receive the best treatment for their lymph node cancer, she felt compelled to help children with cancer get the attention and support they need.

Also present at the event as a speaker was Prof. Nila Moeloek, a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine University of Indonesia and a jury of the 13th SATU Indonesia Awards 2022. She hoped that Indonesia’s younger generation continue creating useful health innovations and making them accessible to everyone to improve the quality of Indonesian people.

“Let’s use this momentum to generate ideas for the betterment of society. Together we are stronger, and building the quality of our human capital starts with health,” said Prof. Nila Moeloek.

Bring Thousands of Children New Smiles and Hopes

Tasked with finding and providing assistance for patients with untreated cleft lip and cleft palate, Rahmad Maulizar is a social worker who gives new smiles and hopes to children with clefts in Aceh.

He enthusiastically drives a minibus to villages across Aceh Province to find underprivileged children with similar conditions he had before. He tirelessly encourages patients and their families to visit the hospital and receive free cleft surgeries from Smile Train Indonesia.

The persistence of the 1993-born man has paid off. As of mid-2019, Rahmad had helped more than 3,200 cleft lip and cleft palate patients get free treatments that changed their lives. According to Smile Train Indonesia’s records, an average of 40 patients every month were operated on by Dr. M. Jailani, SpBP-RE (K), Smile Train Indonesia’s plastic surgeon partner in Aceh Province. The number of beneficiaries significantly increased after Rahmad joined Smile Train Indonesia as a volunteer.

As a recipient of SATU Indonesia Awards from the health category, Rahmad is determined to bring more smiles to children with clefts in Aceh. He also believes that helping others in need is an obligation he is happy to fulfill.

SATU Indonesia Awards comes back this year to search for Indonesian young people who contribute to the community. Astra will present the awards to five young individuals and one group for their efforts in the five fields of Health, Education, Environment, Entrepreneurship, and Technology.

There will be awards for winners at the national and provincial levels. Each award recipient at the national level will receive an activity grant of Rp65 million and coaching support.
