JAKARTA: SATU Indonesia Awards 2016, once again, seeks young people across the nation who own empowerment programs and also act as activators to the surroundings.
The commencement of the 7th SATU Indonesia Awards program in 2016 was marked by inspirational talk show held today (8/3) in Jakarta. The contributors who attended the talk show were IT expert Onno W. Purbo Ph.D., who was also one of the grand judges, as well as the SATU Indonesia Awards 2015 awardees Tutus Setiawan at education category and Grombyang OS at group category.
Seven reasons why Astra once again conducts inspirational program of SATU Indonesia Awards 2016:
Astra hopes to discover young people who have the same spirit as Astra to continuously work and bring benefits to society at fields of: Education, Environment, Entrepreneurship, Health and Technology, as the awardee candidates of SATU Indonesia Awards 2016, following the previous 32 young people.
In the talk show, Onno Purbo said: “After I have been involved in the judging process in several years, I am strongly believed that Indonesia is not a weak nation. In fact, there are many Indonesian young people who work in fields and become activators for their surrounding. If they can, you can. We are all can, Indonesia can!”
Head of Environment & Social Responsibility Division PT Astra International Tbk Riza Deliansyah uttered: “I believe that there are many Indonesian male and female young people who have potential but have not been reached yet by previous SATU Indonesia Awards programs. Hopefully, this program can reach more people this year because they are role models that must be appreciated and coached to continuously bring benefits to their surroundings.
Tutus Setiawan: Touch and Voice as the Main Tools of Independency
To face a ‘dark’ world and stigma in society is heart breaking. Tutus Setiawan, a blind man since aged 8, thinks about the improvement of his blind fellows by establishing Lembaga Pemberdayaan Tunanetra (LPT / translated in English as Institution for Empowerment of Blind People) in 2003. Although difficult, the man from Surabaya, does not want blind people to become continuously dependent on someone else.
Receiving SATU Indonesia Awards 2015 does not satisfy Tutus. He keeps working on his institution. Helped by four friends of him, many education programs initiated by Tutus are continuously running.
“We do talking-computer training for blind people, learning tutorial for blind students in special and inclusive schools, audio library service, outbound activity for blind children, and celebration of Braille International Day through study tour,” explained the initiator of the events that already benefited 200 blind people and their families. Blind fellows mentored by LPT acknowledge Tutus’s important role that they are become more independent and motivated to be bravely competing in society.
Grombyang OS: “Stop Copyright Violation”
Similar to Tutus, Jordan Andrean also wants to bring benefit to society in his surroundings. A man from Pemalang, Central Java, together with his friends establishes Komunitas Pengguna Linux Indonesia (KPLI / translated in English as Indonesian Linux Users Community). The basic thinking is, he wants to open Pemalang society’s knowledge towards technology and information, as well as to invite people using legal operation system. The community that changes its name to Grombyang OS, offers a system similar to Windows and is free to download.
With Grombyang OS, people do not need to violate the copyright caused by using illegal products. Moreover, this system offers faster performance and needs no antivirus. “Recently, we are currently developing a new innovation called grosLAB, an operation system for school’s laboratory,” said the initiator of the system that has been used by 4,000 users in Indonesia.
