JAKARTA: Semangat Astra Terpadu Untuk (SATU) Indonesia Awards 2020 today (1/6) held an online discussion to inspire and reach out to more Indonesian youths who contribute to their communities.
Themed “Education as the Key of Civilization”, the discussion featured singer Tasya Kamila and recipient of SATU Indonesia Awards 2019 in the education category Ai Nurhidayat as speakers. Ai Nurhidayat, also dubbed as the “Warden of Multicultural Tolerance” shared about his experience in education and Tasya told the audience about the importance of having one.
For many celebrities, the appeal of fame and success in the entertainment industry often leads them to pursuing a professional, rather than academic, path. Tasya, however, had a different story. Despite having joined the music industry at a young age of just seven years old, Tasya later left Indonesia to obtain a university degree.
“I’ve known success since an incredibly young age. But I didn’t want to be limited within just that box. I want to grow, and one of the ways to do that is through education. Money is finite, but knowledge is infinite,” Tasya shared.
Appreciating Diversity
Meanwhile, for Ai Nurhidayat, education was a vital vehicle in the promotion of respect for diversity in Indonesia to the society. With a group of friends in Cikubang Subvillage of Cintakarya Village in Parigi Pangandaran Subdistrict, West Java, Ai started a multicultural class where students come from all corners of Indonesia. In the class, they learned to co-exist and connect regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, culture, and economic background.
Ai’s movement began with his meeting with a vocational schoolteacher whose school, SMK Bakti Karya, had been nearly shut down because of the lack of students. Ai and his friends took the initiative to save the school and integrated it with the Salabad Community in 2014.
Today, coming from different islands, Bakti Karya students represent the wonderful diversity of Indonesia. They learn about a wide range of topics from multimedia technology, ecology, to 60 key themes of multiculturalism. Their learning experience is underpinned by five fundamental values of tolerance, peace, networking, culture development, and active learning. Outdoor learning is incorporated into their day-to-day activities, such as gardening, community participation, and engagement in the local arts and traditions.
Moreover, Bakti Karya broadens the students’ worldview and introduces them to an array of professions in the professional classes. They are also encouraged to be the agents of peace in activities such as the “Splash the Peace” program, an expression of peace in this multicultural school.
Until 2019, as many as 35 students from 6 provinces have graduated from the multicultural class. Ai and his friends have also gained wide support from 250 volunteers and mentors.
“Everyone in the world wants peace. How can we achieve that? We need to engage people of different walks of life and give them the room to interact for an extended period of time so that they can understand each other, know each other, create something new together, and learn from each other’s culture. They will adapt with one another and from there tolerance will bloom,” said Ai Nurhidayat.
As with the previous editions, SATU Indonesia Awards appreciate Indonesian youths who work tirelessly for their communities. The Awards will select five individuals who excel in Health, Education, Environment, Entrepreneurship, and Technology. There is also a group category for collectives who work in any of the five streams
This year, Astra added a special category to honor youths who selflessly contributed in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Although the pandemic is not over yet, the enthusiasm of Indonesian youths to apply or to nominate someone they know who may deserve this appreciation is far from dampened. Since registration started on March 2, 2020, SATU Indonesia Awards 2020 has received more than 2,000 applications. The 2020 edition hoped to top 8,654 applications in 2019.
As of today, SATU Indonesia Awards has appreciated 305 youths, consisting of 59 national and 246 provincial awardees. Aside from cash prize of Rp60 million to each awardee, Astra also provides them with continued mentoring.
The spirit and motivation of Indonesian youths to do good for others are aligned with Astra’s mission of prospering with the nation.
