SATU Indonesia Awards 2020 Discussion Presents Environmentalists Agni Pratistha & Maya Stolastika

JAKARTA: Environmental issues are important and exciting to talk about. It is also an area where everyone can contribute, as we are witnessing during this COVID-19 pandemic.

To join the conversation, today (21/06) Semangat Astra Terpadu Untuk (SATU) Indonesia Awards 2020 and Young on Top held a virtual discussion on the environment themed, “Langkah Kecil Menjaga Kelestarian Lingkungan” (Small Steps for the Planet).

The discussion featured Agni Pratistha, actress/model and winner of Putri Indonesia 2007, and Maya Stolastika, SATU Indonesia Awards 2019 recipient in the Environment category and an organic farmer based in Mojokerto, East Java.

Agni used the opportunity to promote about daily things that anyone can do for our planet. They can be as simple as reducing the use of disposable plastic bags and food containers by always keeping a shopping bag and food ware handy or starting to use eco-friendly skin and hair products.

“It is not easy to get into the zero-waste lifestyle. But I want to keep trying and get everybody to jump on the bandwagon. We can do this together for our planet and ultimately for our own common good,” Agni said.

Meanwhile, Maya shared her morning ritual of greeting nature – the soil, her fence, and her plants. “It may seem unusual, but we are used to doing that,” said Maya. The purpose? To let her positive energy connect with all organisms in her garden. “To us, any positive action is a way of expressing gratitude. And goodness is amplified when shared with everyone and everything that is involved in our day-to-day activities,” she explained.

Maya is also the owner of Twelve’s Organic, a group that supplies organic vegetables and fruits and in doing so empowers farmers. According to Maya, she has seven staff members who oversee the business from production to distribution and 20 farmers working in a farmland of around one hectare.

The COVID-19 pandemic inevitably affected Maya and her team. The bright side, though, consumers’ awareness on healthy diet seemed to increase.

This stronger awareness has led more people to incorporate organic ingredients in their menu. For Maya, this meant up to 200% growth in demand for vegetables supplied by Twelve’s Organic and up to 100% increase in the number of new customers.

As with the previous editions, SATU Indonesia Awards appreciate Indonesian youths who work tirelessly for their communities.

The Awards will select five individuals who excel in Health, Education, Environment, Entrepreneurship, and Technology. There is also a group category for collectives who work in any of the five streams.

This year, Astra added a special category to honor youths who selflessly contributed in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the pandemic is not over yet, the enthusiasm of Indonesian youths to apply or to nominate someone they know who may deserve this appreciation is far from dampened.

Since registration started on March 2, 2020, SATU Indonesia Awards 2020 has received more than 2,000 applications. The 2020 edition hoped to top 8,654 applications in 2019. As of today, SATU Indonesia Awards has appreciated 305 youths, consisting of 59 national and 246 provincial awardees. Aside from cash prize of Rp60 million to each awardee, Astra also provides them with continued mentoring.

The spirit and motivation of Indonesian youths to do good for others are aligned with Astra’s mission of prosper with the nation.
