JAKARTA: The volume of marine debris scattered in the waters around Pramuka Island, one of the islands that make up the Thousand Islands, has become increasingly alarming.
But behind all that, an inspiring story bloomed about a dedication of a community who wanted to better manage and reduce their wastes. Through Pulauku Nol Sampah (My Island, Zero Waste) movement, Pramuka Island – a Kampung Berseri Astra (KBA) site – was changing its own fate.
Now, the island’s residents are learning to appreciate the environment. As a start, an old habit of throwing away trash to the water has now been replaced by a new discipline of putting wastes to the proper bins.
Pulauku Nol Sampah is also part of Astra’s Semangat Kurangi Plastik (Passion in Reducing Plastic) movement that was launched on the company’s 63rd anniversary last February. Through this movement, Astra appeals to the Indonesian people to start reducing the use of disposable plastics.
In KBA Pramuka Island, aside from cultivating a new habit, the residents are also learning waste sorting using Astra’s sorting bins, Kotak Semangat Astra. The bins, brought by Astra and Astra Group, is planned to be distributed to all offices and operations sites of Astra Group companies in Indonesia.
In addition to sorting waste, residents of KBA Pramuka Island are learning to recycle plastic wastes and create items of value. “The dedication to preserve the planet was pioneered by mothers who have been working tirelessly for this purpose,” said Mahariah, an initiator of KBA Pramuka Island.
KBA Pramuka Island is one of 87 KBA sites in Indonesia. The spirit shown by Mahariah and the rest of KBA Pramuka Island residents to reduce the use of disposable plastics and improve the quality of environment are aligned with Astra’s mission to prosper with the nation.
