Jakarta Green Run: Thousands of Neon-Green Shirt Flooded Ancol

JAKARTA: Thousands of runners wearing Jakarta Green Run (JGR) neon-green shirts flooded Ocean Ecopark, Ancol, this morning (7/6) as a marking start of the green movement Astra Green Lifestyle (AGL) initiated by PT Astra International Tbk.

JGR, which is divided into two categories: 5K and 10K, was opened by Director of PT Astra International Tbk Johannes Loman and Chief of Corporate Communications, Social Responsibility & Security PT Astra International Tbk Pongki Pamungkas. General Director of BPDAS & Protected Forests from the Ministry of Environment & Forestry of Republic Indonesia Hilman Nugroho and Mayor of North Jakarta Rustam Effendi also attended the event.

In JGR, each runner will represent one tree that will be planted by Astra. Besides, there is also a hand stamp done by Johannes Loman, Pongki Pamungkas, Hilman Nugroho, and Rustam Effendi. Each hand stamp represents 1,000 trees to be planted by Astra.

Bonni, one of JGR participants in 10K category said: "What a fun event! Previously, I joined the JGR last year. Here, the ambience is comfortable, shady, and free from two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles. The unique thing is that a bottled drink is included in the race pack. There’s also a new technology which enables participants’ photos to be directly connected to Facebook account. So, runners can see those photos based on their numbers.”

A running participant in 5K category, Marsha, came from Bogor to join JGR. According to her opinion, the event is suitable to be enjoyed with the whole family members. “There’s also disabled community who shows children that many people with disabilities still have a spirit for running.”

Marsha was satisfied with the venue as well, which was close to recreation area. “The theme which is about the environment gives different feel unlike common running competitions that only expose healthy lifestyle,” she added.

Collecting 46,610 Bottles

Not only trees, runners who brought 10 plastic bottles while taking their race packs would receive Rp 50,000 cash back. The total of collected bottles reached 43,500 pieces or weighed around 435 kg. In total, the number of bottles collected during Jakarta Green Run and Bali Green Run which were held last week reached 46,610 pieces or 520 kg of weight. The number rose almost 90% from the amount of plastic bottles and 16% of its weight compared to last year’s.

In addition to JGR, AGL was also completed with many activities that can be enjoyed with the whole family, free at no charge. Besides JGR, there was also healthy and environment-friendly culinary as well as many gifts and door prizes. There were 9 environmentalist communities participated in the event, namely: Bank Sampah (Garbage Bank), Rumah Perca (House of Scarps), Peri Kertas (Paper Fairies), Diet Kantong Plastik (Plastic Bag Diet), Sahabat Alam (Friends of Nature), Jakarta Clean Up, Komunitas Organik Indonesia (Organic Community Indonesia), KPMP Styrofoam & Kaleng, and KPMP Acrylic & Koran.

AGL 2015 was held in 10 cities in Indonesia, which number has increased from the previous year that was 7 in 2014. Those 10 cities are Jakarta, Denpasar, Balikpapan, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Medan, Pekanbaru, Palembang, Surabaya, and Makassar.
