Inspiranation with 13th SATU Indonesia Awards 2022: The Spirit of Protecting the Earth

JAKARTA: Piles of organic waste are placed in front of houses in Banjaranyar Village, Sokaraja Subdistrict, Banyumas, Central Java. Every day, approximately 30 tons of organic waste are transported and shredded for maggots' food.

Arky Gilang Wahab, a young man from Banyumas, Central Java, saw the potential of maggots as a solution to process accumulated organic waste. He started to cultivate maggots through the Organic Waste Conversion System to Create Food Security program.

“Our maggot cultivation program is able to process nearly 30 tons of organic waste every day. Only 20% of the waste cannot be digested by maggots, which end up in landfills,” said the recipient of the 12th SATU Indonesia Awards 2021 in the environment category at the Inspiranation with 13th SATU Indonesia Awards 2022, broadcast on SATU Indonesia YouTube channel.

Through Inspiranation with 13th SATU Indonesia Awards 2022 event, Arky shared his work in finding practical and realistic alternative solutions to the waste problem in his community.

The Spirit of Protecting the Earth

Inspiranation with 13th SATU Indonesia Awards 2022 was held virtually (6/3) with the theme “The Spirit of Protecting the Earth”. The event invited the Founder of People-Centered Business and Economic Institute and the 13th SATU Indonesia Awards 2022 judge Ir. Tri Mumpuni, Public Figure & Travel Enthusiast Adinda Thomas and host Rizky Kinos.

“To protect the earth means to live our daily lives in a way that is not harmful to the environment and sustains humans living on this planet. I hope SATU Indonesia Awards program can cultivate environmental awareness in the younger generation and encourage them to make innovations that benefit and positively impact their communities,” said Tri Mumpuni.

As a public figure & travel enthusiast, Adinda Thomas also believes that protecting the earth is not a simple thing; this is a big step. “What Arky does is inspiring and can motivate the younger generation to do something for themselves and their communities,” she said.

Maggot Cultivation

Since 2018, Banyumas-born young man, Arky, has extensively learned about how to use maggots to help the government and his hometown find a solution to the piling up wastes that are causing a public nuisance because of the unpleasant smell.

Maggot cultivation process starts with collecting organic waste. The waste is then converted into small pieces by a waste shredding machine. After some time, the ready-to-harvest maggot will be divided into two parts. The first part will be sold to fish farmers, and the second part will be dried as animal feed.

In addition, maggot also converts and processes the shredded waste into organic fertilizer, which is later sold to local farmers.

Maggots and organic fertilizer produced by maggots are important in agriculture and animal farming because of their higher protein content compared to chemical fertilizers and ordinary livestock pellets.

The program partners with more than 130 maggot farms that process waste collected from over 8,000 dwellings, and 72 institutions. It resulted in new jobs for local people: converting waste into small pieces and selling maggots. For his achievement, Arky was chosen as the winner of the 12th SATU Indonesia Awards 2021 in the environment category.

SATU Indonesia Awards comes back this year to search for Indonesian young people who contribute to the community. Astra will present the awards to five young individuals and one group for their efforts in the five fields of Health, Education, Environment, Entrepreneurship and Technology.

There will be winners at the national and provincial levels. Each award recipient at the national level will receive an activity grant of Rp65 million and coaching support.
