However, in its journey, the committee received feedbacks from journalist fellows to extend the registration period, considering there were many journalists who were still preparing their writings. Hence, the registration period was extended until December 2015.

“For CSR article writing competition, the total number of 192 submitted articles is a very large number for me,” said Risa Bhinekawati, the judge who works on CSR issues.

Here are short previews of the six best articles of Anugerah Pewarta Astra 2015:

1st: Goodbye Our Slum Village and Poor Us (M. Akbar Wijaya, Republika)

The article tells a story about Linggar (56), Head of Community Group (Rukun Warga/RW) 04, Sungai Bambu, District of Tanjung Priok, Jakarta, who fought together with Astra Daihatsu Motor to clean up the kampong from garbage and encourage the surrounding community in improving their living standards.

“In 2010, I was confused and crying,” said Linggar who found out that RW 04 Sungai Bambu was selected as the dirtiest and poorest kampong. Finally, in 2011, RW 04 Sungai Bambu successfully won various awards for the category of green and clean kampong.

2nd Winner: Determination Bears Blessing

The articles talks about efforts and determination of residents in Keputih Tegal Timur Baru kampong in Surabaya that is supported by Astra in changing the kampong from a former landfill into a green and clean kampong.

“In several years, Keputih Tegal Timur Baru kampong become the defending winner of Green and Clean,” uttered Tri Priyanto, the community representative appointed as the Head of Kampung Berseri Astra.

3rd Winner: Favored by SBY, Teten Masduki to Olga Lydia

The article depicts Tosca Santoso’s efforts in overcoming floods in Jakarta through tree adoption program and community empowerment in the foothills of Mount Gede Pangrango, West Java. Astra becomes one of the biggest supporters of the tree adoption program. The program goes around the globe after being campaigned by the Ministry of Forestry and Environment in Paris Climate Change Conference.

“It means, if you want to prevent flood in downstream, you must fix the upstream first and Astra presents in Sarongge,” said Tosca who founded Green Initiative Foundation.

1st Runner Up: Five Months after Rukun Wears Spectacles (Muhammad Hafil, Republika)

The article describes a story about Rukun (16 years old), a child who has minus 16 nearsightness disease since childhood. His parents did not know that their son suffered from myopia, because they never had money to visit a doctor. Thank to Astra’s spectacles donation through #generAKSISEHATIndonesia, now Rukun could see, read, do the exam, and go to school without having his mother escorted him like what it used to be.

“Before wearing spectacles, Rukun, sometimes, must sit on the floor at the front so he could read the writing on the blackboard,” recalled Ahmad Fauzan, Rukun’s teacher at SMP Mekar Tanjung.

2nd Runnner Up: Responding to Challenges of Village Electrification (Adi Wicaksono, Petrominer Magazine).

The article raises an issue of limited electricity supply that is faced by 30.000 villages in Indonesia. Astra Honda Motor becomes one of the companies who dare to answer the challenge of 100% village electrification through CSR program of micro-hydro-power plants.

“Currently, there are not many companies that dare to answer the challenge of village electrification through CSR program like this,” said a renewable energy observer of The Indonesian Electrical Power Society Ifnaldi Sikumbang.

3rd Runner Up Winner: Synergy Program to Recover Ciliwung River (Erik Purnama Putra, Republika Online)

Erik brings up the story of Jumari, the founder of Komunitas Peduli Ciliwung, who is actively promoting river restoration program through a campaign called Setop Nyampah di Kali (Stop Throwing Garbage to the River). In collaboration with Astra International, Jumari builds bamboo huts as an education center to foster awareness and care of community to water pollution.

“The existence of Ciliwung Community has successfully managed to reduce river water pollution index in 2014 to 32%, from the previous number as 88%,” explained Penny Susanti, the Head of Gerakan Ciliwung Bersih (Clean Ciliwung Movement).

Through the articles submitted to the committee of APA 2015, it is expected to provide inputs and suggestions for Astra and its group in carrying out social contribution activities in the future, in addition to being the inspiration for the communities and other companies.

According to its principle, wherever the installation of Astra is, it should provide benefits to the surrounding environment, in accordance to the first philosophy of Catur Dharma, “To be an Asset to the Nation”.
