JAKARTA: Astra has developed pyrolysis machines that communities can use to create economic value from plastic waste in Indonesia. It is a downstream activity of the Semangat Kurangi Plastik movement (Reduce Plastic Movement).
Since its launching date two years ago on Astra’s 63rd anniversary, the movement has successfully reduced 517.6 tons of plastic waste: 169.8 tons by the Astra Group and the remaining 347.8 tons by 87 Astra Group’s foster waste banks across Indonesia.
“The Movement is now entering its second year. Astra continues the commitment to reduce plastic consumption and educate people about converting plastic waste into products with economic value. We hope this effort can contribute to the achievement of sustainable environmental development goals in Indonesia,” said Astra’s Chief of Corporate Affairs, Riza Deliansyah.
Waste Management Utilizing Pyrolysis Machine
One of the efforts made to reduce plastic waste is to process plastic waste through a pyrolysis machine to produce diesel fuel.
Pyrolysis is a decomposition process of organic compounds contained in plastic through a heating process with little or no oxygen involved.
Pyrolysis machines do not require a huge amount of power and large space to operate, making them possible to be used by local communities like the residents of Kampung Berseri Astra (KBA).
Astra has organized training on pyrolysis machine operation in 3 foster villages, namely KBA Pulau Pramuka, Pulau Harapan, and a village in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara. Currently, there are eight pyrolysis machines in operation.
The mentoring program has been implemented since September 2020. Astra assists the community, particularly KBAs, in using the pyrolysis machine to convert plastic waste into, for example, fuel for fishing boats needed by the residents.
To date, the three foster villages have been able to convert 2.6 tons of plastic waste into 1,190 liters of diesel oil, which can be sold for Rp6,000 – Rp6,500 per liter.
The utilization of pyrolysis machines to manage plastic waste as part of the Reduce Plastic Movement is in line with Astra’s mission to prosper with the nation and support Indonesia’s Sustainable Development Goals.
