Astra & Fostered-Communities Reduce 418 Tonnes of Plastic Waste

JAKARTA: While the fight against COVID-19 pandemic is overtaking global concern, the world has another urgent issue to address: single-use plastic waste, which will harm the environment if not properly handled.

Committed to overcome this issue, Astra and Astra Group companies initiated Semangat Kurangi Plastik (reduce plastic movement) and have implemented the program since the beginning of this year within the Group companies as well as in the communities it fosters.

Astra has successfully reduced 418.1 tonnes of plastic waste through this program. Astra Group itself reduced 58.1 tonnes, while the remaining 360 tonnes were managed by the 70 waste banks it fosters.

The effort of reducing plastic waste starts from simple acts, such as consuming fewer bottles, cups, cutleries, and packagings made of plastic at the workspace carried out across seven of Astra’s business segments.

Where the use of disposable plastic bottles is unavoidable, Astra Group has provided dedicated bins for plastic wastes, which will be transferred to the waste banks it fosters for processing.

Astra Group’s automotive manufacturing facilities apply similar action, where they replace plastic packagings with reusable materials. They even use boxes that must be returned to the manufacturers for future export batches as packaging for exported automotive components.

Astra designed these programs as part of its contribution to maintaining the natural ecosystem and supporting the efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the government’s environmental programs.

Astra’s contribution in encouraging communities to reduce their single-use plastic consumption is in line with Astra’s mission to Prosper with the Nation.
