PT Astra International Tbk: Desa Sejahtera Astra in East Sumba Participates in the Indonesia–Singapore Orchid Extravaganza at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore

SINGAPORE: The Indonesia-Singapore Orchid Extravaganza, held at the Flower Dome, Gardens by the Bay from 4 July to 10 August 2026, highlights Indonesia's flora and community empowerment. As part of the MASA Singapore 2026: A Sight Into Indonesia's Golden Era series, PT Astra International Tbk ("Astra") presents Desa Sejahtera Astra Sumba Timur from East Nusa Tenggara, showcasing Indonesia's cultural richness and local potential to an international audience.

"The Indonesia-Singapore Orchid Extravaganza continues our joint effort to introduce Indonesian creativity to the international community. By collaborating with various stakeholders, Astra aims to share stories of community empowerment and Indonesia's local potential more broadly, while creating greater opportunities for growth," said Astra Chief of Corporate Affairs Boy Kelana Soebroto.

Desa Sejahtera Astra Sumba Timur is an Astra initiative supporting five weaving villages in East Sumba Regency: Kampung Raja Prailiu, Mbatakapidu, Lambanapu, Mauliru, and Kawangu. The program preserves Sumba's unique Tenun Ikat, where each wastra motif reflects identity, local wisdom, and a strong connection to nature and tradition. Astra and the local community have built a weaving ecosystem involving 250 artisans, 97% of whom are women, ensuring this heritage endures and provides economic independence.

The story of Desa Sejahtera Astra and the journeys of its weavers are featured in the Rumah Sumba installation, which displays Sumba's Tenun Ikat and documents the women artisans. This reflects the balance between tradition, economic empowerment, and the role of women in community development. Astra also supports the Rafflesia arnoldii floral masterpiece, created by Mortier and Jerhemy Owen from 29,100 recycled plastic bottle caps. This work combines creativity, innovation, and environmental awareness, encouraging visitors to reflect on sustainability and on transforming waste into art.
