ZHEJIANG, CHINA: Kampung Berseri Astra Kemiren, located in the Kemiren Osing Traditional Tourism Village, Banyuwangi Regency, has been selected as a recipient of the Upgrade Programme of Best Tourism Villages by UN Tourism 2025. In this program, Kampung Berseri Astra Kemiren competed with 270 tourism villages from 65 countries around the world.
The recognition was announced at the UN Tourism Best Tourism Villages Ceremony and Third Annual Meeting of the BTV Network, held from October 17 to 18, 2025, in Anji, Huzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. The award was personally received by Muhamad Nanda Al Hakim Akbar, a Kampung Berseri Astra local champion.
Through the Upgrade Programme, representatives from Kampung Berseri Astra Kemiren will receive support from UN Tourism experts to strengthen various aspects of destination management, including governance, community economic empowerment, digital promotion, and environmental and social sustainability strategies. The recommendations and outcomes of this program will serve as a foundation for the village’s continued development toward achieving the Best Tourism Villages category in the future.
“This achievement is tangible proof that collaboration between communities, the government, and the private sector can create sustainable impacts on local economies and cultural preservation. It demonstrates that consistent and continuous community empowerment can yield positive results recognized internationally. Astra remains committed to supporting its partner villages in growing independently, innovatively, and competitively on a global scale,” said Astra Chief of Corporate Affairs Boy Kelana Soebroto.
This program is an initiative of the UN World Tourism Organization aimed at strengthening the capacity of high-potential tourism villages to meet the highest standards of sustainable tourism management. The event brought together hundreds of representatives from tourism villages worldwide to share experiences, enhance collaboration, and receive direct guidance from global experts on best practices in sustainable tourism development.
Since 2024, Astra has provided ongoing support to Kampung Berseri Astra Kemiren, focusing on four key pillars: education, entrepreneurship, environment, and health.
Under the health pillar, Astra focuses on improving preparedness and basic health services by providing emergency equipment such as first aid kits, wheelchairs, and folding stretchers, as well as recognizing exemplary health cadres and promoting early pregnancy detection programs.
In the education pillar, Astra supports the development of early childhood education (PAUD) facilities by providing learning tools, storybooks, outings, and creativity training for teachers and children.
Through the environmental pillar, Astra promotes circular economy principles by training residents to turn livestock waste into organic fertilizer and by building two household biogas units that support sustainable agriculture and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Environmental awareness groups have also been established to strengthen non-organic waste management and reduce single-use plastics in tourist areas.
In the entrepreneurship pillar, Astra helps strengthen the local economy by developing businesses rooted in local culture, such as souvenir shops, culinary tourism packages, and the promotion of Osing specialty products, supported by business facilities and management training. Currently, there are 50 homestay owners with 92 rooms, 40 local market vendors, and 40 members of POKDARWIS (tourism awareness groups) involved in managing tourism activities, tour guiding, and art studios in the village. Each year, more than 3,000 domestic and international tourists visit Kampung Berseri Astra Kemiren to experience the authentic Osing culture and the village’s beautiful atmosphere.
This cross-sector collaboration has made Kampung Berseri Astra Kemiren a true example of synergy between cultural preservation, economic empowerment, and social sustainability—now recognized at the global level.
Astra’s dedication to developing the Kampung Berseri Astra program across Indonesia aligns with its mission to Prosper with the Nation, while also supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Indonesia.
