JOHOR BAHRU, MALAYSIA: Five Desa Sejahtera Astra (DSA) villages received accolades at the ASEAN Tourism Awards (ATA) 2025, held Monday, January 20, at the Persada Johor Convention Centre in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. These awards recognize the collective efforts of the local communities in managing sustainable, community-based tourism, supported by various stakeholders involved in the development of these villages.

The synergy between local communities, the government, and supporting entities—including Astra through its DSA program—has enabled these villages to maximize their local potential and unique strengths. This support is manifested through a focus on cultural preservation, wise natural resource management, and enhanced tourism appeal. The results not only benefit local communities but are also expected to contribute to the broader tourism sector.

“Astra continually strives to sustainably improve the welfare of rural communities and stimulate village economies by developing local potentials. These awards are a testament to the hard work of village communities and the fruitful collaboration between various stakeholders. We hope this recognition will motivate village communities to continue innovating and enhancing tourism appeal, domestically and across Asia, thereby creating a positive impact on collective prosperity,” said Astra Chief of Corporate Affairs Riza Deliansyah.

This achievement is the result of close cooperation between village communities and local stakeholders, as well as ongoing support from Astra. Each village boasts unique attributes and strengths that support community-based tourism development. The Astra-supported tourism villages that received awards are:

1. Kaki Langit Tourism Village (Bantul, Yogyakarta) – 5th ASEAN Homestay Awards. Combines natural beauty and local philosophy in a memorable tourism experience.
2. Osing Kemiren Tourism Village (Banyuwangi, East Java) – 5th ASEAN Homestay Awards. Preserves local culture and traditions through an authentic homestay experience with 48 homestays managed by the community.
3. Sudaji Tourism Village (Buleleng, Bali) – 5th ASEAN Homestay Awards. Offers nature and culture-based tourism with consistent community management principles.
4. Botubarani Tourism Village (Bone Bolango, Gorontalo) – 4th ASEAN Community-Based Tourism (CBT) Awards. Focuses on whale shark conservation through educational tourism activities such as snorkeling and diving.
5. Iboih Tourism Village (Sabang, Aceh) – 3rd ASEAN Public Toilet Awards. Provides standard-compliant public facilities and offers marine attractions, including dolphins and snorkeling.

These awards are part of the ASEAN Tourism Standards Awards, which aim to recognize and honor community-based tourism in Southeast Asia that has met sustainability, hospitality, and service excellence standards. These standards encompass environmental preservation, community empowerment, and the provision of adequate facilities and services for tourists. The success of Astra-supported tourism villages in receiving the awards demonstrates that collaboration and commitment to these values can yield impressive results.

Astra’s DSA program, initiated in 2018, aims to empower local communities through training, mentoring, and infrastructure provision. The program focuses on developing village excellence through three product clusters: (1) Agriculture and processed agriculture, (2) Marine and fisheries, and (3) Tourism, crafts, and culture. By 2024, Astra has developed 1,196 DSA villages in 35 provinces across Indonesia. Astra’s commitment to developing DSA villages in Indonesia aligns with its mission to Prosper with the Nation while supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Indonesia.
