Astra’s Sustainable Business Contribution for Today and the Future of Indonesia

Jakarta: In accelerating the transition towards a more sustainable company, Astra consistently carries out various sustainability initiatives through seven lines of business, contributing positively to ensuring the needs of the current and future generations. These initiatives are realized in accordance with the principles contained in the Astra 2030 Sustainability Aspirations.

Astra’s seven sustainable lines of business comprise Automotive; Financial Services; Heavy Equipment, Mining, Construction & Energy; Agribusiness; Infrastructure and Logistics; Information Technology; and Property.

“Astra has expressed commitment to consistently make transitions in terms of business portfolio, development of quality human resources, and contribution to social progress in Indonesia in order to become a more sustainable organization. For this reason, Astra established the Astra 2030 Sustainability Aspirations as a guide for the transition journey for today and the future of Indonesia,” said Astra Chief of Corporate Affairs Riza Deliansyah.

The transition towards a more sustainable company is applied to Astra’s seven lines of business and is implemented through the following initiatives:

1. Automotive

Through the Automotive line of business, Astra reduces carbon emissions by makinga comprehensive contribution to the acceleration of the electrification ecosystem inthe automotive sector. Currently, Astra has three battery electric vehicle (BEV) carmodels, two plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) car models, and 14 hybrid electricvehicle (HEV) car models under the Toyota and Lexus brands, as well as five BEVmodels and one PHEV model under the BMW brand in the market. While for two-wheelers, Astra Honda Motor offers two BEV motorcycle models, the EM1 e: and theEM1 e: PLUS.

As part of the efforts to develop an electric vehicle ecosystem, Astra, through Astra Otoparts, has launched Astra Otopower, an electric vehicle charging network. Astra Otopower currently operates 31 public charging units in 28 locations, such as office buildings, residences, and toll road rest areas across Java.

2. Financial Services

Astra Financial, as a financial services line of business with 14 subsidiaries, expands its Tree Planting program in critical areas to reduce carbon footprints.

Throughout 2023, Astra Financial planted more than 58,000 trees in 29 provinces in Indonesia to absorb carbon dioxide, strengthen local ecosystems, preserve biodiversity, and mitigate disasters.

3. Heavy Equipment, Mining, Construction & Energy

United Tractors and its subsidiaries, as a Heavy Equipment, Mining, Construction & Energy line of business, develop future business strategies that are focused on the mineral mining sector, as well as the renewable energy sector through the utilization of solar power plants (PLTS) and the development of mini-hydro power plant (PLTM) potential to increase the renewable energy mix.

These strategies are reinforced by Astra’s strategic commitment to refrain from investing in new coal mines and coal-fired power plants, thus enabling the company to focus on new investment opportunities in non-coal and other mineral mining, such as nickel and gold.

4. Agribusiness

In the Agribusiness line of business, Astra Agro has implemented several adaptation program plans to improve climate resilience. One of the primary focuses is building methane capture facilities to capture methane gas produced during the liquid waste or Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) treatment process, which is then reused as an alternative energy source for factories.

5. Infrastructure and Logistics

Astra Infra, as a company in the infrastructure and logistics line of business,continues to be committed to being more proactive in supporting sustainability effortsby boosting its renewable energy mix for more environmentally friendly energymanagement through various program initiatives, such as installing solar panels forstreetlights and operational offices on the Tangerang-Merak, Cikopo-Palimanan, andJombang-Mojokerto toll roads and at the Penajam Banua Taka Port. Other initiativesinclude the use of biofuels, the implementation of eco-driving, and the installation ofPublic Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU) at eight rest areas on theTangerang-Merak, Cikopo-Palimanan, and Jombang-Mojokerto toll roads and KM456 Semarang-Solo toll road rest area.

6. Information Technology

Astragraphia also markets products that utilize environmentally friendly raw materials, such as FUJIFILM Business Innovation printers that use SUPER EA-ECO toner and Smart Energy Management technologies designed to reduce power consumption and CO2 emissions. Incorporating these latest technologies enables the printing process to be carried out at 30-35oC lower temperature than conventional toner’s 200-250°C.

7. Property

Astra Property strives to promote sustainability through initiatives that prioritize water and electricity efficiency as well as green building certification. The initiatives include installing solar panels at Menara Astra and adopting a Water Sensitive Urban Design for one of Astra Property’s portfolios, Ammaia Ecoforest.
