Baku: Astra supports the Indonesia Pavilion, initiated by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia, at the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) “In Solidarity for a Green World”, taking place from November 11 to 22, 2024, at Baku Olympic Stadium, Baku, Azerbaijan.

Organized by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), COP29 consists of multilateral meetings between countries and the industrial sector to assess global efforts in advancing the Paris Agreement and Convention, and limiting global warming to 1.5°C based on the latest scientific information. At COP, world leaders gather to evaluate progress and negotiate the best strategies to address climate change.

The Indonesia Pavilion at COP29 carries the theme “Indonesia’s Sustainability Stronger Together”, divided into four sub-themes: Enhanced Ambition on Renewable Energy; Greater Actions on Indonesia’s Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Uses (AFOLU) Sector; Robust and Inclusive Multi-stakeholder Climate Actions; and Unlocking Innovative Climate Financing and Partnerships.

Astra Director Gita Tiffani Boer participated as a speaker in the Indonesia Pavilion’s talk show session on Climate Actions (November 11), while Energia Prima Nusantara Director and Pamapersada Nusantara Group Legal Advisor Boy Gemino Kalauserang spoke at the Renewable Energy Leadership Forum (November 12). Astra Otoparts Director Ronny Kusgianta will be a speaker at the Climate Breakthroughs for Finance, Forest, and Waste session (November 19), and Astra Agro Executive Vice President Sustainability Bandung Sahari will speak at the Collaborative Approaches for Climate Resilience and Carbon Sequestration session (November 21).

“Astra began its journey to integrate sustainability aspects comprehensively into its corporate strategy in 2021, which led to the launch of Astra 2030 Sustainability Aspirations—the company’s medium-term commitment through 10 sustainability aspirations to be achieved by 2030 and beyond,” said Astra Director Gita Tiffani Boer.

The company has achieved notable progress towards Astra 2030 Sustainability Aspirations. As of 2023, it has reduced its scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 13.96% from the 2019 baseline, increased its renewable energy mix by 44.63%, recycled and recovered 98.67% of its solid waste, and reached 2.27 million beneficiaries through its community development programs.

To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Astra has implemented various decarbonization initiatives, resulting in energy savings of 668,000 MWh, renewable energy usage of 11.3 million MWh from solar PV, biomass, renewable energy certificates (RECs), and carbon removal through methane capture facilities in the agribusiness sector, along with purchasing carbon credits from the Indonesian Carbon Exchange in other business units.

As for solid waste recovery and recycling, the company has implemented a circular economy approach, focusing on refurbishing, remanufacturing, and recycling.

Its socio-agroforestry carbon offset projects empower communities and contribute to climate change mitigation. By 2024, these efforts have impacted 10,000 farmers and facilitated the planting of over 1 million trees on 2,491 hectares of land.

Astra’s commitment to making a positive change for today and the future of Indonesia is in line with Astra’s mission to prosper with the nation while supporting Indonesia’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
