Farmers from Sejahtera Astra Cikajang Village tend to coffee seedlings in their gardens, a first step towards improving the quality and productivity of Garut Arabica coffee.
GARUT, WEST JAVA: The morning dew still clings to the coffee trees as farmers in the Garut highlands begin their routine. The sound of running water and the whisper of the mountain wind bear witness to years of tradition. Yet, the steps once marked by uncertainty are now transforming into a path of renewed hope, as Garut coffee is not only thriving but also securing a more dignified livelihood for farming families.
This transformation is evident in the increase in family income achieved through the Desa Sejahtera Astra Cikajang program. Average monthly income has risen from approximately Rp1.3 million to around Rp3.7 million, with some families even surpassing Rp4.5 million per month. Beyond economic upliftment, the farmers now own an independent cooperative, which strengthens the institutional framework of their coffee enterprise and ensures the sustainability of the community-based agricultural ecosystem.
Garut Arabica coffee, cultivated with the assistance of the Desa Sejahtera Astra Cikajang initiative, has also successfully penetrated international markets. Exports have reached Europe, Dubai, Egypt, and Singapore, with the most recent shipment going to Thailand, significantly reinforcing Garut coffee’s position in the global value chain.
“Astra believes that village independence thrives when communities possess the capacity, access, and opportunity for growth. Strengthening the Garut coffee ecosystem is a tangible expression of our commitment to support rural prosperity by cultivating local potential that yields sustainable benefits,” said Astra President Director Djony Bunarto Tjondro.
Crucial to this transformation is the pivotal role played by local change agent, Bernard Suryanto Langoday, the Local Champion of Desa Sejahtera Astra Cikajang. Bernard has encouraged the implementation of quality standards and modern cultivation techniques and has enhanced farmers’ understanding of value-added processing and marketing. The coffee sociopreneur has built a coffee ecosystem from upstream to downstream, involving over 4,000 residents, boosting farmer productivity, expanding market reach, and establishing village coffee as a new source of pride. This support has reinforced technical knowledge while simultaneously nurturing the farmers’ confidence in managing their enterprises.
The complete story of Bernard’s journey in driving change in his village alongside the Desa Sejahtera Astra program is available on the SATU Indonesia YouTube channel.
Through the Desa Sejahtera Astra initiative, Astra is committed to continuously delivering sustainable social impact to rural communities across various regions of Indonesia.
Astra’s dedication to supporting rural economic empowerment and strengthening sustainable agricultural ecosystems aligns with its mission to Prosper with the Nation and contributes to the achievement of Indonesia’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
