You have probably heard of countless corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs across Indonesia. However, few initiatives have had a lasting impact over the years, such as Kampung Berseri Astra.
Astra's program extends beyond financial support by offering ongoing, hands-on mentorship to help communities achieve economic and social independence. This approach has been successfully implemented in many regions across Indonesia.

Kampung Berseri Astra (KBA) is a community-based development program that integrates four pillars of sustainable social contribution into a single village setting, including Health, Education, Environment, and Entrepreneurship.
The program's core mission is to create communities that are clean, healthy, educated, and productive. Beyond that, KBA strengthens communities' capacity to adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change.
In 2024, Astra developed 35 new KBA sites. Several of these are Kampung Iklim (PROKLIM) villages, a program run by the Ministry of Environment and the Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH) that aims to improve communities' resilience and their ability to adapt to and mitigate climate-related challenges.
Kampung Berseri Astra is structured to ensure communities continue to thrive after the formal mentorship phase ends. Key benefits include:
The following regional implementations serve as successful models of the Kampung Berseri Astra program.
KBA Karang Joang is a notable Astra Group CSR achievement, transforming a modest neighborhood into a clean, healthy, educated, and productive community. This KBA in Balikpapan has also achieved food independence and developed a thriving small business ecosystem.
UMKM Srikandi Berseri, for example, produces majun cloth, an eco-friendly recycled product made from fabric waste. There is also Rumah Pintar Astra, a community learning center, which offers over 250 books and a computer hub accessible to all residents.
This KBA has also developed into a nature and ecotourism destination, attracting regular visitors. KBA Balikpapan is recognized as one of the program's notable success stories.
Pulau Pramuka, known for its marine tourism, has been transformed into a KBA that integrates environmental conservation, community empowerment, and sustainable ecotourism. Since 2003, residents and KBA have collaborated to address environmental damage caused by unsustainable fishing, inadequate sanitation, and unmanaged waste.
Key activities carried out by the Kampung Berseri Astra Pulau Pramuka community include:
KBA Kampoeng Oase Ondomohen in Surabaya serves as a benchmark for conservation and waste management in an urban setting. It was selected as a reference site for a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) survey, which is recognized under the United Nations umbrella.
This community is recognized for its effective waste management ecosystem. Residents process household waste on limited land and have developed eco bags made from fabric scraps, a unique local product that has become one of KBA Surabaya's most distinctive attractions.
Kampung Berseri Astra is a flagship program led by Astra's President Director Djony Bunarto Tjondro. His sustainability-focused leadership has enabled KBA to contribute directly to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:
From this, it is clear that Astra has truly put this into practice on the ground, achieving measurable and sustainable results.
